This case demonstrated the importance of understanding standards of care, and having malpractice insurance. Reader boards on liability (second life) were helpful.

Knowing what standards of care we are required to provide to avoid negligence and following through with them are going to be key in providing safe patient care.

Things happen, and to err is human. Malpractice insurance is there for a reason. It is better to have then to say "I wish I had it", after the matter.

It is very easy to make a mistake especially in a crisis but you should stop take a minute and make sure everything is correct. It is your job as the RN to know the standards of care and to keep your patient safe. Now I understand how important it is not to rely on your employors insurance and to cover yourself with your own personal insurance.
