Legal Sim thoughts from Yuni, Rochelle, Megan & Holly

This was a very sad case that highlighted serious negligence issues. We also realized that having malpractice insurance when working as an RN is extremely important. Although the nurse had a very small role in regards to the medical negligence of the case, she still ended up owing a large sum of money. Learning about this case has made us realize how important it is as an RN to be aware of all aspects of care that is going on around us. As RN's we need to know the proper standards for providing patient care and be able to hold other members of the medical team accountable to those standards.

Great comment about holding other members of the team accountable. In the case we reviewed, specific errors made by a few people cost a lot of others significant amounts of money. This is why we verify orders and review settings on pumps etc. with others. I wonder if the respiratory therapist who set the ventilator so high had another team member check the settings?

It is a huge responsibility to look after other disciplines care, such as Dr's, RT, etc.... For this and every case the RN should be a constant advocate for the pt. in all aspects of care.

The renowned philosopher Aristotle said the wisest question any man (or women I suppose) can ask is "why". We don't want to sound like 5 year olds on a car trip asking why every 10 seconds, but it's vital especialy as new nurses that we ask why we or our teammates are doing what they are doing.

Group five

Makes you kind of wonder about just being in the room sometimes. When you ask healthcare professionals about these situations and how they try to proect themselves from them you really don't get any common answers. I guess you just do the best that you can.
