Private coverage

I think that this exercise has proven to everyone just how important is is to not only be insured by your place of work, but to have your own private malpractice insurance. It is important to provide care up to the standard of care, but mistakes do happen...not to mention there are a lot of sue-happy people out there!

Yes! Private malpractice insurance is very important. There are definitely a lot of "sue-happy" clients out there, but some cases are very valid. Health care providers shouldn't be expected to be "perfect" and error-free, but we should be cautious and double-check our work, especially when someone's life is at risk.

Sue-happy people! Very true - that's why it's do important to be vigilant at all times, and operate at a high standard of care with every pt. hopefully then none of us will every be in the same situation as the one we are reading about.

It's amazing when you ask in the hospital including the ICU most nurses don't have malpractice insurance. They all say they should but the majority do not.

That is true. It seems that one can never be too careful these days. Any employee needs to be careful even of what they say to the patient, or about the patient. And sometimes regardless if you walk on egg shells, some patients will still be rubbed the wrong way by something that was said. I say this, because in the birth center (precpetorship) there have been incidents like this. Sometimes, I can see why the patient feels defensive and wants to pursue their complaint, and sometimes it just makes no sense. So... think before we speak?
